‘The New Nice’ for real, I guess.
“The internet is among a record 237 individuals and organisations nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize…
The internet’s nomination has been championed by the Italian version of Wired magazine for helping advance “dialogue, debate and consensus”…”
(BBC)
Some thoughts on this:
The Internet did not do good. The people who use the Internet have done good. (The people who use the Internet have also done not-good and, occasionally, even bad or evil). The Internet has increased our capacity to do a lot of things. Good included.
However, nominating ‘the Internet’ for the Nobel Peace Prize is snubbing those who have made the Internet a tool of peace.
Maybe someday the Nobel Society will grant the Peace Prize to ‘Humans, in General, Who Seem to Be Pretty Sympathetic and Usually Willing to Do Good Things If It’s Not Too Inconvenient For Them.’ Rather than ‘the Internet,’ I mean.
I would prefer to see a group like the wikileaks team, who I think its fair to say have been greatly underappreciated when it comes to all the good they have done.
