Music Review: Day 1&2
Jason and my opinions lined up quite well for these first two days, with the overall ratings being the same. I really liked the overall sound of the Fray quite a lot but found a lot of the songs blended together, with the real standouts being Say When and You Found Me.
I liked the Kings of Leon significantly less overall; my first reaction when starting the album were to cringe at the voice of the singer, despite it improving over time. Most of the songs I found pretty eh, but my favorite came as a surprise at the very end of the album with Beneath the Surface. I also really liked Sex on Fire. The other songs that I found good or at least passing were Crawl, Revelry, and Use Somebody.
I think tomorrow we may go for something in a new and completely different direction… perhaps some techno…

So Benny and I are listening to a new album every day. (He will stick to this, I likely won’t). Before I begin I should probably outline how I rate songs as I go in my iTunes. I rate them based on the album they are on, so that I can pick out the good songs of the album. Basically, they are rated not relative to any other song in my library except those on the album itself.
Stars: 2-skip, 3-not memorable, 4-solid, 5-good/great/orgasm
The Fray - The Fray
Liked this album a lot. I’ve always enjoyed the music The Fray makes, and this album was no different. My favorite songs were You Found Me, Say When, and Never Say Never. The album really dropped off in the second half, like really just went from win to fail in about 2 songs. Overall, I’d say 7.5 / 10 as an album.
Ratings (in order of songlist) : 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 3, 3, 2, 3, 4, x [did NOT like the last song, a bonus track I think]
Only By the Night - Kings of Leon
This album was pretty good. My first adventure onto the Kings of Leon bandwagon. Had heard their stuff on the radio before and liked it, but never ventured to get an album. My favorite songs here were Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, and Beneath the Surface. Honorable mentions go to Manhattan, Revelry, and Be Somebody. Actually, I liked a lot more of the songs on this album than the Fray, however the magnitude of my like was not as great. As I said, my star ratings cannot be compared between different albums. Overall, give this album a 6 / 10 for my tastes.
